This thread caused a LOT of arguments last time... But, that mk1 we used is my mates and it was never as quick as it could/should be, however the mk2 was rapid so cars at either end of the scale. As for gearing, yes the mk2 is geared shorter and better IMO.

Ok, just checked the Merc website. A140 - 1.4 A160 - 1.6 A170 CDI - 1.7 (diesel) A190 - 1.9 A210 Evolution - 2.1 The 2.1 Evo is quite nippy! ;)

Not sure... The 1.4 is the smallest engine, then theres a 1.6 (I think) and possibly a bigger one?! Ill have a look.

LOL My GFs Mum has one of these (I hate it) and its only a bl00dy 1.4 so slow as sh!t. What numbers did it have on the back?! i.e. A140 = 1.4

I was also doing this a couple of weeks ago in mine... Using the stopwatch & speedo method (in the 306) I was getting very similar readings to you for 0-60, but slightly faster for 0-100 at low/mid 16s! :o Anyway, I then borrowed a performance meter thingy (cant remember the model)...

Standard v standard... The mk2 172 is fractionally quicker to both 60 & 100 than the Cupra R, but theyre very close. The mk1 is a shade quicker again, then the Cup again slightly quicker than that, so in a drag style race, the Clio(s) would always be just in front. However, the Seat (having...

The first one I drove didnt have them and I never saw them on any of the other pics... But, I then saw one with them on and thought the onwer had been cunning and located some nifty little Cup badges and was impressed. ;) Turns out theyre standard!

I managed to get one of these for free... Fitted it the other day and I am just in the process of seeing how much (if at all) it affects the fuel economy, as thats what Im after. Will keep you posted. ;)

The RS comes with steel wheels, crap seats, windy windows, no air-con, no ABS, etc.. as standard, so they can be ripped apart and made into rally cars. More likely to be a GSR?! Got the same 276bhp engine as the Evo V, VI, VII & VIII but with less torque at 260 lb/ft in this case, but...

Nope... Ok, so he doesnt drive like an idiot all the time, but he does drive it quick so its gonna be a fair representation. He reckons they are superb and have no trouble feeding all 210bhp onto the road, even in the wet! :D

Depends on the insurer... Some companies will not allow any or certain mods, others allow them but charge and some will allow them with no charge. Only thing to do is ring and ask! ;)

I kinda scuffed one of mine in the snow. Just started to slide really slowly down our road and the back, drivers wheel came to rest on the kerb! :o Luckily it was only very low speed and its just put a slight mark on there. Was p!ssed off though...

Well, found out that my mate actually runs Toyos on his Honda Accord Type-R and hes done about 8k miles on the fronts so far, with plenty of tread left, so fingers crossed...

The reason for this is that the mk1 172s actually have a different gearbox to the mk2 (& Cup) with a longer gearing, so thats the problem. :( Compare the revs at 100mph in 5th between a mk1 & mk2 and the mk1 revs much lower and has to overcome the effect of the higher gearing, so is less...

Yeah, Evo covers a lot of cars...

My nice new Toyos arrived in the post yesterday, so I cant wait to get them fitted and see how good they actually are. The factory fit tyres on the 306 are Pirelli P6000s which are not that great and when you swap for summat else (currently Bridgestone S-02s) you cant believe the difference...

So did I, but my mates mk1 definately does not have one! :confused: Its a Y plate and does have an alloy spare still, so doesnt tie in with what others have said.
