yeah you need a multimeter to check some voltages.
batt charged should be around 12.4v with engine off
engine on should be around 13.8-14.4v with engine running
yeah it should show ID3 tags and you will be able to control your ipod from the hu aswell

Id like to move to a newer solution that didnt involve an external amp, but theres nothing on the market that comes near to my head unit.
my hu runs my front comps just sweet now the are running two-way active
yeah you said when you brake they all come on. this would indicate either a bad earth at the rear lights or a problem with your brake relay.
emai1paul does it do it only on the brakew lights or does it do it with the others e.g reverse / indicators??
if you look in your boot inside the is a securing bolt for the lights. then when you get the lights off the should be a screw with a black wire coming off it that is the earth for that light cluster.
have a look to see if it looks rusted or anything
i think an mp3 DVD would be good enough for most people as you can get a fair bit more on them.
im liking the look of the new alpine one

the clock has TINY 1.2w filament lamps in them rather than leds:( and i dont know what is in the rest of the dash
(mines on a 1.6 16v so it has the same dials in it)
http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/default.php?cPath=44_65these are the led equvilant of the ones behind the clock...
well it could be the size of the cables that are causing the problem. increased resistance causing a large volt drop
the cables would have been better if terminated with http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=42715&doy=27m6these
yeah for some reason the little display when blue was a bit of a mis-hap but it think it goes well with the white.
im not 100% convinced on using blue because im not sure how good the contrast would be on the display
you can lower volt drop but cant stop it.
i know caps dont work i also know that increasing the csa of the big three is all you need to do on a small/medium install.
