ive now got mine wired in 2-way active(i believe that is what it is called) off the hu.
i still think you may be asking too much of the hu if it is just happening all of a sudden(after a about 30 mins my guess??)
i used to get this on my alpine h/u until i wired up the speakers different.
it is a sort of protection for the hu from overheating too much. it makes it sound sh*t so you turn it down

this is my dash using white leds bought from...
ok ill try my best here.
once you have got the dials you will see there are clips holding the front plastic on.
once that is off you will need to remove the needles, i did this by hooking a piece of wire under either side of the center bit and pulling.
then turn them over and remove...
the 509t ones are the same as the ones you find in the dash top display of the mk2s.
adam3442 is the forum member that did that guide perhaps he can confirm 100% that 501s are right

there is a fuse in the dc-dc converter(mine is a 20A).
that means if you turn it up too loud the fuse will keep blowing and just you would get pissed off and stick a bigger one in there;)
my bro melted his wiring loom together in his car before by not putting a seperate feed in.
im not saying this will happend but it could, so id rather be safe than sorry
