Interesting that AP22 figures match the Autocar ones quite closely. I dont think my Williams was anything out of the ordinary in terms of power/acceleration. As std. it put out standard bhp and torque.
There does seem to be plently of evidence that mildly tweaked Willys get quite a bit quicker.
0-100 Varied between 18 to 20 seconds in my Williams 3. Here are a load of random AP22 runs from the Williams. You can work out rough time between speeds with a bit of subtraction...
Start Speed 0.0mph
mph s g ft hp
10.0 0.94 0.55 6 35
20.0 1.86 0.47 26 61...
The drainage system from the front windscreen got blocked on ours at about 25000 miles and the interior flooded, but I dont think thats common. The leak in the boot was fixed under warranty by the previous owners. A wheel bearing went at 24k. It was rumbling when we test drove it, but I mistook...
We all already know that bhp sells. Its clearly about sales, but it adds a bit more variety to the range, which can only be good. Plenty more second hand fast Clios secured for the future.
Also if the breathing mods are already done, itll save the hassle and cost of getting it done yourself...
Jeremy - Does it come with the 4k rattle as standard, or will I have to pay extra for it? Also, it it meant to be a 10bhp increase on the 172 (which would mean its be about 176bhp), or is it a real 182bhp?!
Cant wait for all the "wot is fazter, the mk1, mk2, Cup, 182....." discussions
Be careful when you seal it. Make sure the bore of the intake pipe is at very minimum the same size as the intake on the original airbox. If you are intending to seal the airbox up to the intake in your pictures, I think you will need a wider bore tube to get enough air to the engine at high revs.
At a constant 75mph in 5th gear in our MK1 172, we get about 41mpg. Id personally want a better mpg from 1.2, but I have to confess that my 1.4 16v had miserable fuel economy. The 172 really isnt much worse (until you thrash it that is!)
As for Ecotek, some people reckon they work, others...
You can get mk1 172s for as low as £6k for a high mileage car. From £7500 for one with low mileage.
And if you can get a personal loan, then do that instead of finance. With finance you will not own the car as the loan is secured against it (and therefore no mods allowed etc.).
Ive not got that car anymore! Ive got a MK1 172 now which is much quicker than the one from that graph.
Oh yes, it was thrashed from 650 miles and it had about 8k miles on it when it was RRd I think.
Ive gone back to my std. mk1 airbox and filter, but instead of the rubbish tubes that Renault supply, Ive used silver "Green" tubing to get airfeeds from underneath the car. Who needs a PiperX Viper :D. Looks like the K&N filter doesnt give any extra "go" over the standard set up.
Looks like...
We need paddy to take a pic of his graph from the same day and put it up here. Im sure his torque and power was a bit "wonky" (the technical term) too, but it made a load more bhp.
Some 172s are faster than others. My mk1 172 is much faster than my mk2, but there are MK2s that are exactly as fast as my mk1. My best 1/4 mile run in the MK2 172 was 15.6, with the rest late 15s and 16s :o A full second quicker in the MK1.
Big flat spot in bhp from 5500rpm. The torque is up...
This is from the RR day in Bury in July 2002 where my standard 172 MK2 put out 136bhp at the wheels to Paddys 154bhp from his standard 172 MK2.
Anyone in the know care to analyse it?

The only thing you see on the Williams standard exhaust is a bit of stainless steel tailpipe. Why not have a stainless backbox as itll be hidden anyway, like the decat pipe? You can get the tailpipe on a custom exhaust to look exactly the same as a Willy tailpipe. Its nothing special!
