Keep an eye on ebay, gearbox's can be had for circa £200 and its only a 2 day job for a complete novice! Make sure you replace the clutch and release bearing at the same time!

Nick defo get onto money claim, I went through a similar situation and got my initial outlay plus the courts ordered them to...
Basically changed the clutch and replaced the gearbox on the 172 by dropping the subframe on the gearbox side only but didnt lower the PAS rack very much!
I managed to get it all back together yesterday and all is running fine, but the steering keeps catching and freeing as if its notchy and...
Its 5yrs or 72k miles for the belts but most recommend getting them done before this, circa 60k
Phone Renault and they will be able to bring your cars service history up on there screen and at least be able to tell you if they did the belts or not!!
Then i'd give Steve at R-sport a call and go...
tbh i'd go down the new engine route, I did when my head gasket went! So much easier and you can change all the serviceable parts to make it future proof!
I took the opportunity to fit a complete 182 engine and manifold in my 172
yeah its harry manback's old motor, i've read up on its history but this isnt the box given up the ghost as such!
The bell housing has cracked and split where it bolts to the engine. The bolts are still in the block as is part of the bell housing, the split is approx 1cm ish wide!
