Doubt you'd be able to crack it like that, they're quick thick.
Must be something loose somewhere.
Have you tried torquing all the inlet bolts up to 12nm?
Could be thermostat or coolant temp sensor.
If It thinks it's gone cold, it could possibly run on a sort of cold map, richening the fuel and causing the smell.

I seem to remember getting a Milwaukee drill bit set on a deal a few years ago.
1mm up to 10mm in half mm increments.
They cut through metal no bother and they were just plain HSS. They do Cobalt and Titanium ones too for a bit more money.

I've tried it and it's a bit fussy as you say, they need cleaning well.
Seems to take ages to dry for me as well. Wasn't very keen on it.
