If it's fairly new and was written off by being in a rear end shunt then there's a good chance it was majorly f*cked and not properly straightened back out again.
I've got mine (ph2 though) on 60mm springs with standard shocks. Been on them for about 3 months, had 40mm springs on before for around 4 months and it's still on the shocks that's been on the car since i bought it year and a half ago with no problems.
I went to the stealers to get mine and gave them a 182 reg off one in there forecourt and he came back saying "sorry that plate doesn't show up on our database" LOL
One of the best mods to a non-rs IMO :)

Preferred it before, looked like a proper track **** then. Now it just looks like an uncared for cup:(
You don't need to tell them within 48 hours. To answer your question, if the bodyshop comes back and says it needs more work done, yes you can then turn it into an insurance claim. The insurance company will say it needs to go to one of their approved repairers but its a load of b****cks, you...
Think it all depends on the area you live in mate i.e what the police are like. I've been stopped twice and my plates have no postcode, an illegal badge, and the front one is cut down and the police have never said anything about them.
