Could it be a dried up aux belt creaking and jumping when you steer & put demand on the PS pump? Drop of water on a creaking belt often cures the problem temporarily, and you said the problem went in the wet weather?
I really don't know where I'm gonna go with this. I might run it till it breaks. I certainly won't be doing an engine rebuild or dropping a new engine in, I'll probably just get myself another 172 and swap the good bits over.
So I may not be of any help in diagnosing the problem :pensive:.
I think it's there hot & cold. It was certainly there last night when I pulled the leads from the coil pack, and the car hadn't been started for a day or so. You thinking dephaser noise only when warm?
That was disappointing 😢. With lead no. 4 disconnected the noise seemed to stop, though I was a bit disconcerted by the sparks flying around the coil pack, so I rushed it a bit.
Will check again tomorrow .
I've been running the car and listening to it a bit more recently due to one or two things going a bit wrong, and I've picked up a funny knock/tap at lowish revs, and seems more noticeable as the revs drop. I hope it's clear to hear in the video, and for info the engine is running with no aux...
I've ended up having to change the aux belt whilst replacing a suspect dodgy alternator (http://www.cliosport.net/threads/alternator-power-steering-or-air-con.809078/#post-11421735). So the bumper's off, aux belt's off, plus a bunch of other stuff which would need to be done for a cambelt...
Forgot to mention that the alternator got very, very hot, even the slam panel above it was scorchio!
I'm gonna change the alternator, and hope that's all that's required, otherwise I'll have to whip it all out again :disrelieved:😂.
I think so, I've removed it out now with the intention of replacing it. I used a jubilee to compress it to take tension off the belt which worked fine - does this mean it was functioning right?
I took the car out for a spin today (smug in the knowledge it passed its MOT yesterday) and got a strong whiff of burning and a constant whine, which seemed to be coming from the alternator. When I got back home SWMBO could smell it from indoors :openmouth:.
I stuck a screwdriver on the...
Cool, I'll have a look tomorrow. Superglue best option? Seems to me like it's thin consistency will help it seep into a small hole and seal better than perhaps summat thick like silicon?
J&R right? I read a few threads suggesting this. Maybe I'll do a fix now, and new shafts if it doesn't last. But will need new box oil too then.....:smirk:
Passed MOT today, yay! Advisory n/s cv boot has small hole.
Now I think I'm being a bit special here, but I just can't get it clear in my head what I need or how to do it!
Are there specific boots for these cars, or should I go universal? ECP brings up just two inner boots when I search by car...
