Considering all comments then maybe the advice should be - If you are going to fit a brand new DCi rack then great, crack on and you will get all of the advantages (cheaper, lighter, easier to fit, better mounting), but if you can't source a new DCi rack or don't want to pay for one then the...
It's a lot lighter and has a direct mount to the subframe which is 1) much easier to fit and 2) eliminates the possibility of the rack moving as there are no longer rubber bushes to perish.
All of the fluid was drained prior to looping. The pinion is still lubricated with grease on the power rack so the lack of power steering fluid in there shouldn't cause any issues.
Before swapping out the rack I was 50/50 on whether it was the rack or the column, but with the replacement rack on the knocking has stopped so it must have been my rack.
Yes I think you are right, but after 2 bad experiences with the DCi rack I was reluctant to splash out on a new one after pricing one up with Renault Wolverhampton!
After 10 days of hard driving I'm pretty confident in saying the looped and blanked power steering rack is the better option. It has a much better feel to it and feels a lot stronger, there have been no funny noises or cracks from it. The only real downside seems to be you loose the solid...
Well after loads of faffing on with 2 dci racks and ending up with the same cracking/knocking problem on both I refitted an original power steering rack with the ports looped and new rack bushes today.
So far so good, the steering feel and weight is excellent and no issues with self...
These are the ones, centre bore was unmodified.

Having just fitted the jamsport kit the discs are Pagid 54639. 295mm / 26mm, 5 X 100 re drilled to 4 X 100. Only slight issue I found is the centre bore is 62mm not 60.1mm, although it doesn't seem to cause any issues with vibration.
I'm trying to think of a way to increase the bore to help...
I'm experiencing a knocking from the rack when the steering is under a lot of load i.e. maneuvering or turning sharply. At first I thought it was because the original rack I put in was cracked as the pictures above show so I put a replacement rack in. This was fine for about a week but has...

I wouldn't go totally manual steering, its almost undrivable at city driving speeds
Re: Very annoyed - rebuilt whole suspension with new mounts and now I have a knock?!
I'd try what I suggested first and if it does knock I'd be inclined to say its the top mounts. If not then start looking lower down.
Re: Very annoyed - rebuilt whole suspension with new mounts and now I have a knock?!
If you jack the car up on one side, put your foot in the wheel spokes and push down does the knocking occur?
Fitted the replacement rack today and the steering is great, excellent service from Renparts in replacing the cracked rack, no questions asked and received Tuesday after emailing them on Saturday night. I love how easy it is to change the rack now.
Something I should have mentioned above, the...
I don't have a 3D printer myself, but all the info you need is in the first post to get yourself a set made up. If people have a friend with a printer it could make it even cheaper.
Completed the conversion on Sunday night. All went well and it worked first time. It's amazing just how much stuff comes out of the engine bay when doing this conversion on a FF. The benefits of being able to change a whole steering rack in 30 minutes, 5 minute aux belt changes, cheaper cam belt...
Stated fitting today, got the old rack out without dropping the subframe. I was on with swapping the track rods when I noticed the manual rack was cracked. I chopped the lines on the PAS rack so I've had to put it on the car with a jubilee clip tight keeping it together. Hopefully this will be...
Had them on my car for about 1000 miles, very impressed so far. A very stiff sidewall and very progressive on the limit. They do like a good bit of heat in them before they really start working, once the air temp is up above 10 they come in to their own after a bit of warming up. Still very good...
I've now sourced all of the parts I believe I require to convert my 172 FF to EPAS. I've put my parts list below for anyone wanting to do the same. Unsure on belt length at present, I'm going to double check with string before buying.

I think it's just the spring and rubber base creaking against the beam as they are loaded and unloaded, mine and a few others I've been in do it, wouldn't say it's anything to worry about. A bit of grease on the spring base sorted mine for a while but eventually starts up again.
