Glad to hear you got it sorted. Thats a big problem with garages, most people don't have a clue about the mechanics of a car so a garage could say it's needing something like a new clutch when it doesn't at all and the vast majority of people would just go with it.
As above I would get the halford 150 piece pro set if you can stretch to it and then buy other stuff as and when you need it. You will always find you need new bits and pieces for new jobs until you have done loads of things tbh.
The gearbox and driveshafts can be used on both, they are slightly different in terms of design, but you can safely use the 1.4 ones with the 1.8 and vice versa. In terms of engine mounts I'm not 100% sure, I know you will be able to use the 1.4 dogbone and gearbox mounts but I'm not too sure...

As winston says, but the main problem with all these things is that they are interchangable, which is why I mentioned the block as that is the only way of knowing 100%.
You can re-use the valver ECU so it's not a sure fire way of knowing but it's worth checking. A standard williams ECU will only go to 6500 RPM but a valver will go to 7000+. The only way to tell 100% is to see the back of the block as the williams block has extra strengthening veins on it or a...
Try asking about this on www.williamsclio.co.uk and www.retro-renault.com to get a better idea from people who know about these cars a bit better than on here, and you may find someone who will go and have a look for you. Personally I would say it's unlikely to be you clutch, and whatever the...
Should be able to get some valver ones that would go straight on as well I would think as they are electric as well. The other alternative would be to just spray the current ones.
It's not £200 for springs, it's £200 for springs and shocks.
Personally I don't know what is best, but as Sam has said for many people it's not cost effective to go buying coilovers for a 1.4 Clio that would cost about 60% of the price of the car.
Surely theres some people with experience...
I would put money on either the cable not being fitted properly or they have used an aftermarket cable. It is well know that any clutch cable other than genuine renaults ones are s**t on the mk1 and cause more problems than they solve.
IMO it sounds like total bullshit from the garage.
Using white16valvers terminology:
the one on the left in this phot would be "varying rate" as you can see the coils become closer to each other near the bottom.
In the photo below you can see a "constant rate" spring as the coils have the same seperation the whole way down...
Re: Clutch, waht clutch?!
Standard all the way unless you are running some major engine mods as the standard clutch is very good. I got a valeo (same one you would get from renault) one for £60+VAT iirc from a local factors.
How low does the compression have to go in a cylinder to stop it actually igniting properly?
I know theres loads of variables involved, but generally speaking for say an engine which has about 13 - 14 BAR when running as it should?
Just wondering really as I wasn't sure what sort of pressure...
Try doing a search as it has come up loads of times. Quite a bit can be done and you can get them over 100bhp with the usual sort of mods (headwork, cams etc).
