I think its do with the brake fade, some one correct me if i'm wrong, as faster cars are capable of higher speeds in theory they will be breaking longer & harder, drums are good but there sealed units = no cool air so there for will over heat meaning your brakes are no longer at there prime...

Re: cup weight saveing There is loads you could do to get them lighter, like the rear wiper & mechanism, could be 2-3 kg's there, alot of cars dont come with rear wipers any way! aslo things like sound deadning material & rear door card speakers, all added weight & could still live with out them
