brake pad wear sensor wire, it usually goes down into the front wheel arch and has a nobble on the end that fits into a hole on the brake pads! so when the pads wear down to a certain limit the sensor touches the disc in which sets the (!) light on the dash off.
start the car hold the revs on 2500rpm and give a few short blasts of carb cleaner down the throttle body letting the car settle between sprays, and unplug every wiring connector you can find (car turned off;)) and clean the contacts up and put some wd40 on them including a drop in the end of...

If the water pump has failed it gives up and pops a seal, only bonus is they are not timing belt driven they are run by the aux belt
