Everyone needs additional training as what you learn before passing your test is woefully inadequate. The trouble is most people justify their driving ability just like you have...never had a crash so no need to improve anything.

It could be the throttle body? I had the same and it's usually the throttle pedal sensor or the throttle body itself, and seeing as you've done the throttle pedal already probably worth trying a replacement body. Couple of hundred notes from Renault, £30 secondhand off here, or swap yours...

I think mine sounds great. At low revs on a light throttle it's only slightly bassier than standard. But give it some and it screams along nicely.
