Jack it up, put it on axle stands? Not as easy but you won't have to move it.
It definately sounds like a linkage problem rather than a clutch or box problem.
It's to do with the ecu. It prioritises faults and looks at them on a set time scale. So it will see a faulty sensor and give you a light on the dash, realise it's not really an issue and after a few days cancel the light on the dash, then, say a month later it will look at it again, see the...
If an easy out doesn't work then try drilling the head off. Then remove the seat rails and use a set of molegrips to remove the shank and thread portion.

The car is due a 5 year service and I thought while its there I would have some new spark plugs fitted.
Now I don't want anything super expensive, or anything cheap and poo. Just some good plugs that will do the business please.
