Done mine tonight at work, shortened the sleeve and added a shim over the sleeve to remove more play. Assembled the struts and theres zero play but the bearing moves nicely. Will find out tomorrow wether this solves my knocking when i refit the struts to the car. If it works i'll post pics and...
Hmm, i dunno if its just the weight difference tbh, i had 3 passengers in the car yesterday and it didnt look as low as the picture above. But then the springs have only done 100miles so it could get lower i suppose.
Will post pics of mine when its settled (next weekend). I still dont get why the Cups dont lower as much as other Clios. I understand that they are lower to start with so the actual amount they drop by will be less than other Clios but i'm sure they should sit the same after fitting, unless i'm...
I tried the washer fix on mine but that didnt solve any knocking at all, all it did was cause more play when un sprung. I think grinding my shell is the last resort for me, i'd sooner modify the exisiting top mounts and if that fails fit some solid top mounts.
Got bored this morning so pulled the struts out, i'll take the top mounts to work this afternoon and machine the sleeves then report back tomorrow morning.
You can actually see the gap here....
(yes i know the above tyres are shot, i'm off to ProTyre in a min for some new ones)
Cool will go have a look in a min, i take it they're with all the car stuff, sponges etc? (not got alot of tome you see, so need to be in and out quick!)
I know they had 3 sets in stock last week, but i had one of them. They price matched for me so i got them for £123 delivered so you should you get a good deal if they have any in. As said though a 172 Cup will not be as low as other Clios on Sportlines.
lol aint it just. If i get time i'll whip the struts off Sunday night and machine the sleeves Monday morning then hopefully my knocking will be a thing of the past.
I know what you mean, replaced the top mounts when i fitted my coilovers on my Ibiza Cupra and they were lovely, thats why i was concerned when i felt the Clio ones. I take it this is the sleeve that needs reducing....
lol, so in total the sleeve is shorter by about the thickness of a blade. I'll measure up a blade then machine my sleeves down then in that case :) Good work :) If that all works out and solves the knocking then i may be able to knock up a batch of new shorter sleeves for other people who have...
Obviously, but if other's cars go faster than his then theres clearly something wrong. Thats like saying 'ooh my Veyron wont do more than 120mph, but meh i dont need to go that quick anyway so i'll just leave it'
I'm wondering if machining the the sleeve will make the whole assembly too tight and not allow the 'bearing' to move and maybe make the springs skip or something?
Wasnt really meant as a Cup vs thread, just thought it made a nice read for Cup owners. But as the times show theres not much on it on track under ideal conditions with the same driver, so on the road if you add in different driver skill and mods and tyres etc it would be near impossible to say...
Had a knocking from my front suspension since owning my Cup, the 'washer' fix made no difference. Fitted some Eibach springs today so had the dampers apart and noticed that when assembled and all done up tight i have 'play' in the top part, when you shake the rubber part it feels loose still...
I've copied this from an old EVO magazine i had, i think i missed the article when i 1st got the magazine but now i have a Clio it made for interesting reading. Essentially its an on tack comparisson between the following cars: 172, 172 cup, Clio V6, Clio Cup racer and V6 racer. Enjoy :cool...
Yeah your right, the angle of the belt coming over the top of the seat needs to be around 90 degrees. But IMO the lower points are safer than c pillar mounting, as long as you have NON-reclining buckets and your strapped in ok the seat back will not compres and therefore not compress your spine...
Not a good idea mate, if you get shunted up the rear and bend your c pillar your harnesses will go slack. Ideally they should be mounted to a harness bar on a cage but the lower rear seat belt points (usually under the rear bench) would be safer.
