Basically, what we should all gain from this thread is a bit of respec for the 1.6 clio, as really like the OP is saying it's quite a quick car, proven by his highly accurate and muppet-proof testing equipment and the 'fact' it can do 125mph on the speedo (whats that about speedo's overreading...
No they are not! Give your head a wobble...in the grand scheme of things, it's a slow car. Think VTR pace, a 106 GTI and a Saxo VTS will blow you away.
As for your timing method, it is about as effective as if you were using an abacus.
Walsall humour ;)!
After being sat in your garage all saturday afternon and most of the evening watching you work away on my car, I can verify this to be true!
Same goes for Fred too. Both had no issues with me standing there watching and asking questions!
Well done Dave. I think you'll finally be happy with this from what I've read - seemed like you were on a hiding to nothing in previous attempts to resist buying one!
I haven't read the thread so may have missed details but will you be keeping the Trophy too?
Talking of rare colours, ny...
I've heard some say this too and I can never relate to it - the steering is brilliant I find! For comparison I also used to run a MK5 Zetec S which is renowned for its good steering too. I can only assume people had worn steering components in these cases (highly likely with old Pugs lets face...
I also watched quite a few 106 gti's pass Clios on track at Rockingham. Granted, some were heavily modded, others however just had the usual induction, manifold, exhaust etc.
I dont get the drop a massive lump in an old, lightweight car either. As well as losing original character, surely it massively upsets the balance and becomes nose heavy when you start talking 2.0s and so on?
OP, love your white one with the RS 7 spokes...how long are we going back to when you...
Lol Dannys had a GTI and a VTS! I agree about the 5k comment though...some days I'm in the mood for it and it feels great, others it can be a bit tiresome.
Does the Clio have a fair bit more noticeable torque on tap then, lower down the rev range?
Coming together nicely...love the interior; great headunit, mats, ph1 gearknob, ph2 dash :D
I think you followed me out of FCS, I was in my red 106 GTI.
I'd be looking at a MK5 zetec s on an 02/52 plate. Ticks all the boxes, massive step up from a 1.2 Clio I found. Insured mine for reasonably money at 19 too, cheaper than a GTI/VTS on insurance and easier on the petrol.
I'm 20 now and have a 106 gti, paying 1100 with 2 years ncb and 3 years...
What about that little hole under the n/s wing mirror? If I remember from my Clio, one side had an exterior temp sensor in, the other had just a hole where LHD models have the temp sensor.
Thats what I did...had a mk5 ZS for a bit too...felt like a huge step up from my 1.2 Clio even though it was older and had almost double the miles!
Would like a Renaultsport soon though.
How long ago was that? If I recall correctly it was you that said you used to front your insurance.
Most 18 year olds would find that the step from a 1.2 to a 172 is a huge cost.
1.6 16v's are a perfect step, only I'd far rather a Zetec S (looks better and drives nicer) or a 106 GTI/ Saxo VTS...
If the cams and valve springs are taken from the 106 GTI/VTS engine then yes, slightly more, as the JP4 (C2 VTS engine) has bigger valves.
Although leeds_182's engine might just have the rocker covers from the C2 VTS which are a straight swap and unlike the J4 ones, don't leak oil!
