Can't hurt to give it a go. The desktop cd you download is also a live CD so you can run Ubuntu from CD first to see how it copes with your hardware.

Simple answer: personal preference. It's not a resource hog. No spyware. No viruses. Tons of free software. Rarely have to reboot for updates. Uptime is unlimited (see above) you don't have to reboot every few days to free up resources. 6 month release cycle (as opposed to MS's years)...

there aren't many commands you need to know really... just write them down as you come accross them. Not tried the DVD rip... you want to install all the media codecs and then everything else is up to you... you can always install other things later on if you want. Another great resource...
