I have an ext HDD that has been formatted on a Windows NTFS partition and I want to be able to read/write to the HDD in OSX. Google seems to suggest I need to install software on the Mac, if this is the case which is the best one, whats involved etc etc. Thanks

You can either take the plastic cover of that connector you are using now (there are plenty of guides on YouTube), this will allow you to fit both the HDMI cable and the optical connector in at the same time or... You can buy the "proper" adaptor which just has optical and rca connections on...

Try a clean up program like CleanMyMac or OnyX. Mine has been fine after the update.
