I have a suspicion that that translucent multi-wire connector might be hooked into the speaker wires? I'd unplug the unit, test the stereo, and see if it still works. If it does then obviously you can cut the connector and remove the wires. The button should be fine to go though.

People do stick the bigger scoops from later cars on, but it doesn't really suit these tbh.

I'm fairly sure the wiring for the buttons comes up from below, so by moving the buttons further down you don't need to extend the wires. It would require some fairly significant modification though, probably best to take the lower dash out of the car and cut the framework out and put it back...
