When I did it I just soldered straight on to the connections for the main bulb - that way the strips are turned on and off with the bulb AND you can turn them on manually with the interior light too.
Whut? Is anyone having problems with outside dirt getting in? I can't see how.
If you don't oil a filter and let it dry out and break up, then it will leave crap in the pipework as it slowly self destructs.
Look after it and there's no issue.
I've always liked Sciroccos, they're like the Volvo in that they aren't just normal looking hatchbacks - someone's actually designed something half sporty.
That said the scene reputation ruins it.

No cable throttle AFAIK. The motability kit would take about an hour to remove at the absolute worst. Definitely not dual controls.
Engine wise, there would be absolutely NO difference that you could ever tell unless you knew that the breather hole is in different...
