Best to get some kind of CAF or heat shield on it to stop it sucking in hot air. You won't really notice any gains, but if you start taking in hot air you'll soon loose power

I wouldn;t have thought what way they are facing is the important bit, more getting the ends of the coil springs to sit in the right position in the spring cups. Cups are shaped to sit the end of the spring in.
