They are to loosen the dirt in theory before rinse then wash so you reduce the likelihood of minor scratches etc. You have to get the right conditions to use them imo, and your neighbours will think you're potty ;)

if you're coming from a 106 gti your not going to recieve the same performance gains from exhausts/induction like you would have done. 1*2's are a pain to tune on the cheap.
