CV joints are under boots on the driveshaft, If they are not packed with grease the break quickly.

They are a part of the driveshaft, so you need a new shaft.
as a guide GSF do them for about £70 each, for NON sport models.
Don't go to renault. That will be bloody expensive.

For £1k you could have someone fit cams and map the engine. MAYBE get a BMC CDA induction kit too.
Cams are not realistically going to return 19bhp
Remember that a 172 engine is not 172bhp to start with. Its 172 PS (169bhp iirc)
