On a valver, (you remove the air box first for access), on the front of the gearbox, there is a little filler hole. The level should be up to the filler hole with the car level. ie, when filling it through the hole, fill until it spils out.

If the hub does need replacing then you should be able to pick one up from a scrappy pretty cheap.

as said, exhuasts pop due to unburnt fuel in the exhaust. You need to be running rich or have a map which fuels on run down.

i've only heard good things about B&M, can't justify one myself but aparently work wonders on french "dairy Lea" 'boxes.
Edde doesent recommend them as the gearboxes are not exactly bullet proof to start with and changing gear quickly with a short shift wont help the synchros.
