Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
Oh I agree, but the initial outlay on a starter kit for a Westie is 4-5k at last look, it may well be more now. Initial outlay on the 172 was £550... Let's hope the end point isn't the same ££ as well Ali!
It's a seriously crap wheel in a bad state. Luckily I...
Sean/David, Can I say that I think your Oreca rollcages, in particular the Race and Race Plus versions, look completely rubbish to me and not fit for purpose!!
Care to prove me wrong?!
;)
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
So, again, hardly any time to fiddle with the car tonight, but finished removing the front end and then took a few general pics:
Bonnet and slam panel removed.
Nearside
Offside
Marking up where bits came from.
Engine bay.
Manifold has been...
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
Nothing that extreme unless I end up going racing in the trackday trophy or something, but I've not got time for anything like that for a while (you understand why!). For now it'll be club sport kind of spec. Sound deadening will come out but carpet will go back...
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
That's the real good thing tbh. Come Thursday night I won't see the car for 10 days at least, so it's great to have another daily runner.
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
Apologies if some of this is a bit basic for some, but i'm using it as a diary of what gets done and when...
Not a lot of time free this evening to work on the car, but manaed to get 90 mins in the garage by myself.
First off discovered the car has some...
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
I know :( that was with a friends discount as well.
Thanks for the offer btw chap.....might well take you up on that one day!
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
No, that was invoiced to the insurance company. Bizarre. Regardless it means the car has a gearbox thats nearly new. Happy Jon.
I love MK1's, it's been a while since I owned one, I had however forgotten how s**t the dashboard is!
Dan, you need to reply to for...
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
So first job was obviously to source the parts to replace the faulty bottom end. Good old eBay came up trumps with a 43k 172 Cup bottom end taken from a rear ended 03 plate car. I made the guy an offer and last night travelled into deepest darkest Essex to...
So having been without a Clio for about 5 days I thought it best to buy another. They are, as those who have driven one, quite addictive. This was crazy idea number one.
The second crazy idea is I am definitely definitely definitely building this to a budget, a small one.
I now live in...
They obviously won't be as good as the more recognised brands, but my point was are any of us at a level where we'd notice?
I'd see what spring rates are specced on the other brands and try a set of springs close to their rate. It's all about setting the car up so you are happy with it, not...
Expensive or cheap coilovers, who cares. As if they cause a car to spin! I'll 99.9% guarantee that some other factor caused the car to spin. To high an entry speed, lifting off on turn in, braking as you're turning in, tyre pressures, moisture on the track, tyre temps etc etc. It could be...
If the oil light comes on on the dash as well it could be the oil pressure switch is giving up the ghost. It's £8 to replace from Eurocarparts and there's a guide on here somewhere.
Rob, I work alternate weeks at either end of the country so commute south every other week.
Mike, he won't regret going for the BMW, they are so well made.
172 is going to be a toy, it only turned up today and is a bit of a project as and when I get time. :)
Swirl flap delete was £155 at PMW...
Far from it Dave. If I sat at 70 i'd get nearer 60 I think. 55 is mixed driving on A roads, and m/way at various speeds around 80 odd.
No worries about the remap either - i've just bought a 172 as well.
Gave the new car a clean - finally, after 2k and 5 weeks - so thought i'd take a pic or two. I absolutely love it, it's perfect on the motorway and is averaging 55mpg, i'm smitten.
It's had the dreaded swirl flaps removed, had a recent Inspection 2 and I've spent a few quid getting a few...
