Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
Working back down south for 4 days this week for the first time in ages. Sadly not much has progressed in the meantime, but I have been buying bits as they've become available and are reasonable value.
I don't think i've got that much to buy now except a few...
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
So had the evening to myself last night and it's the last time i'll see the car until early May, so thought I ought to crack on a bit. Dad's set some time aside next week to rebuild the bottom end of the spare engine, so the head has to come off the engine in...
Thanks mate. Appreciated. My thoughts exactly, though this block is more of a strip down to check it's OK, the other will be rebuilt with new bits.
Don't suppose you know the torque settings for main bearing bolts and big end bolts do you, finding this info is a nightmare. They weren't that...
Guy's what is this sealant round main bearing no.1?
Is it just a sealant or is there a reno part?
Also would you re-use these:
They don't look too bad to me, but there is the odd mark, nothing major. Big end bearings are as clean as a whistle.
Cheers
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
Time for an update.
Dad had removed the sump from the bottom end I bought and had removed the oil pump and chain drive + the crankshaft pulley. The bottom end had a fair amount of sludge in it indicating that water has mixed with the oil, we both think it'd...
Thanks guy's. I thought the tools were nearer £300, so i'm quite tempted at that price, but i might keep an eye out on ebay for some as £60 you paid seems a bargain.
Dan, appreciate your help with everything as well. We'll keep in touch as I might just go down that route.
Thanks guy's, yes I've read up as much as I can on here and have got a massive bookmarked folder of all the relevant information I think we need. I was just after some notes on anything I might have missed and as many opinions as possible on something which isn't obvious that I might have...
Howdy.
I've purchased a MK1 172 thats got a dodgy bottom end. The head was rebuilt last year, so that's all fine. I've sourced a 172 Cup bottom end which was apparently running fine when removed from an accident damaged car last year.
The plan is to strip down both bottom ends (the Cup one...
No, I bought a 172 as a project instead. I think i'll leave mine alone for a while, though I've bought an OE ipod kit so all the dash trim is in the boot at the mo. lol
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
Last night I finished taking everything off needed to get the engine out, save the rad, with is just sitting in place and can be lifted out.
Removed the airbags ready for the new wheel.
Rolled the car back out of the garage, washed all the birdcrap off of it...
Re: Jon's MK1 172 project thread
I have an end goal, no time constraints, and some knowledge. I'm reading up and thoroughly researching stuff before doing everything, or anything major.
TBH, it's a Clio, not rocket science. An engine is an engine. And I've only spent three hours on it!
The...
