Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread
Further progress this evening, though mixed fortune.
First off my harnesses had arrived:
A pair of 3" 6 point Sabelts. Lovely. They've been added to the pile of bit's.
Slightly fed up of not actually seeing much happen I tackled the rather simple...
Hi guy's, here's tonight's question!
The head is off the engine and we're trying to remove the block in the most economical way. We've loosened all the bellhousing bolts and started prising it apart.
We can get it this far before running out of room:
What is the best way to proceed?
1...
I bought an OMP wheel that was quite flat in places. I went into Sainsbury's and bought a suede brush and some suede shoe cleaner spray for £6ish. Half an hour of elbow grease later and it was as good as new. The flat bits take a few goes, but the suede rises a treat.
Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread
Just a can of engine degreaser spray. Goes on as foam and then gets washed off once all the bubbles have gone. It'd be bloomin difficult to do the job in situ. Trying to decide what colour to go on the cam cover and then inlets.
Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread
Success!
I've managed to hire a set of the Renault tools and very quickly last night the head came off. Didn't have a great deal of time but at first visual inspection it looks fine. Both Dad and I have a free evening tonight so we'll take a better...
Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread
So back down south.
Decided last night was the ideal opportunity to remove the head from the engine in the car as had a couple of hours. Plenty of time I thought.
Bloody car.
I removed the engine mount which had been put back in place to get the car...
Hiring/borrowing a full set now Fred so should all be sorted soon (fingers crossed).
Hold fire for my next thread with rediculous questions (which will likely include q's about torque settings. :D )
Thanks mate that's exactly the situation we're in - and i'm hoping the locking tool alone will be sufficient. Just could do with getting hold of one thats all.
Thanks on the sump plug trick, will try that.
So, you're all saying we don't need to remove the dephaser to get the rocker off, just...
Thanks chap, might well take you up on that pending Sash letting me know tomorrow, as she's local.
Had someone else pm and offer to hire the tools as well so all appreciated.
Is the dephaser tool just like a male socket? (if that makes sense!)
We tried that mate but the engine is still in situ and I've not pulled the belt all the way out so there wasn't enough slack.
Pulley tool Fred? For the dephaser?
You live you learn I guess. Cover bolts all back on and the belt was coming off anyway as this head is going on other block. Just need to lock the cams to undo the pulleys now. Stupid design!
Cheers guys, yeah can go past yours anytime Fred really. Didn't realise the pulleys had to come off to get cam cover off to get head off.... Removed all the cam cover bolts, cut the belt and now can't undo the pulleys. Lol.
Will let you know.
Sash, yes please - can you text me in morn?
Fred, down in Sussex this week, then Durham next. Depends if you have a spare set that you can do without for a few days/weeks (whatever works best)...
... However Sash if your dad has them then bingo. For the f4r right?
I'm on the verge of buying the bloody things, but just wondered if anyone with a set fancies earning a few quid and letting me hire some, or even borrow?
I'll love you loads!
I think it was mate, I didn't recognise you otherwise i'd have said hello. Was in the black BMW next to you.
We'll have to catch up soon, especially when i've finished building my phase 1 172 and drag it up here!
By the way, the car is bloody lovely. The colour looked stunning.
Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread
There's no real deadline mate, but i'd like to think it'll see a track at some point this year and then the Ring next year at least once - no concrete plans yet though.
Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread
Thought it felt about that much Mark tbh. Nice to know though.
I'm turning into you by the way, I now have 13 wheels and tyres for this car! Haha
