you dont need to compress it to the point where its loose, just so that you can undo the top nut without there being obvious tention from the spring as your un doing it.
have you tried putting it as tight as possible then undoing the nut ?
try taking it on a long drive, if it keeps dying and not holding a charge then get the battery tested. could either be the battery has had it or the alternators had it, how olds the merc? if its fairly new then its probably the battery
i would just be looking for a second hand bundle on here/ebay that has sub amp and wires mate. iv got a sony set up and its really really good, wiring up is pretty simple, theres guides everywhere online
doubt it will be too low on sportlines mate, my cars dropped about 60mm and i can just clear tiny speed bumps have to half on/half off bigger ones. whats the drop on sportlines, well anyway it wont be remotely close to that so i would go for it
