I got told by renault mine is perished and needs changing,ive just had a look and it looks fine but is it better to be safe than sorry? could it cause any damage?ie knocking the cam belt off.

I dont know anything about CC but i would assume itys meant to do that because your probably going to need to slow down or speed up if your changing direction.
