If its a standard WRX i would have thought it would top out at about 145 ish? It does seem to get rapid at the top end quite quickly, or the V6 slows down suddenly or runs out of puff quickly.

You mean the temperature gauge on the dash is all over the place? Hows the car performing otherwise? My 182 had a failed coolant temperature sensor (along with a fair few other 182 owners) which caused the temperature gauge to go up and down randomly, along with the revs of the car locking...
