I think it's the driveshaft, my old 172 was doing similar before I traded it in, and Rentech diagnosed that as the driveshaft.
So the car's at work, and the van has where you work on it. They'll be able to find you car that way... but as has been said, what else is in the bag?
Were your house keys on the keyring, and was your licence in the bag or anything else with your address on it.

hmm... not as simple as I first thought then.
I guess adding the car to your mum's policy temporarily will just allow her to drive it. Can you not start your policy on the 172 for the day you pick it up?

I've had an epic morning. Got up early with the satnav in hand... filled her up with fuel and off I went.

I made this change 3 years ago so I'll offer my advice:
I regret trading the Ph1 for the 182.
The 182's certainly not slower, but its a very different car. I loved the rawness of the Ph1 which you don't get in the 182. The fly by wire throttle in the 182 is crap compared to the Ph1's cable...
