the ecu should be capable of running the car (in a crude manner) to a better standard than it sounds like yours is. VVT is switched by the ecu.
2 months is aweful btw. I've fitted ITBs in a day, including fitting aero catches.
depends how far you intend to mod it. If you're stripping it fully then get the cheapest ordinary 172 you can find with a decent engine. Pointless getting a cup "because it handles better" then changing everything
i'm not sure if the gearbox fitment is the same. Mk3 has the starter motor in a different place so the box is definitely different. Never had to pull one out though

how the hell did you conclude that the 1.8 8v is heavy on fuel? I was getting 40mpg from my 1.8 8v laguna, and the extra weight will make the economy worse than the clio.
