    172 headgasket DIY

obviously not worked on anything that's ACTUALLY a t**t of a job TBH. One of the easiest modern engines going. Ecotec vauxhall......now that's a t**t. Hardest part is doing the cambelt

    MOT refused!

the place we use has the ramp sunk into the ground so there's no ramp to go up. Even the lowest of cars will go on without a thought

    Crappy aux belt service

not auto tensioning on the 1.6 AFAIK sounds like it needs tightening

    ATS rear coilover units .

they work very well being a true coilover rather than separates with adjustable platforms (the only ones for the clio currently I believe). I dont know about doing just the rears but a whole car set works great. Major benefit over the H&Rs is damping adjustment.

    Inner CV/Driveshaft Boot

lower arm has nothing to do with the CV joint or driveshaft Inner CV boot is a pain in the arse, it's not a servicable item due to how it's assembled. Havn't worked out a relaible repair yet, but I'm trying to find something. New driveshaft is the only way TBH :(

    Turbo project!!!

You're right in theory, but it doesn't become a restriction anything like as early as you're suggesting. I've seen in excess of 400bhp quite happily, on a t2 flanged turbo, many times over, on both 1.8 and 2 litre engines

    Hybrid Rolling Road = Failure

wonder if the cambelt is out a tooth

    sm_wrc uncaged!

it's not aweful, but it's pretty average.

    Low?

just about, we have very good low entry arms though

    Low?

hehe dont think it will stay like that for more than about 5 minutes on monday, just had to get a pic of it
  11. S

    Low?

Always got Monday for that :D This is with ASTs just bolted on as they came lol

    Low?

    awww yeah

    Hybrid Rolling Road = Failure

I've known a lambda to die from just being unscrewed and put in a different downpipe, so you're best to get a new one if you've had issues before. CTS as said is near the thermostat.

can you lower the "5k kick" so it comes in earlier?

it's not when we've done it. Depends on your fueling strategy I guess

    Hybrid Rolling Road = Failure

That overfueling is down to more than just different valve size, got to be a sensor up the swannie. I'd change coolant temp sensor and Lambda

Thinking of having the 172 cammed up, any opinions?

ITB setup doesn't use an idle control valve, cold starts and idle are actually much easier to control on ITBs than with the standard plenum. We've added an ICV to the plenum for the cable throttle conversion. Idle is now normally better than standard

can you lower the "5k kick" so it comes in earlier?

ph1 has a slightly less strict reg to adhere to, but still is not allowed much acceleration fueling and is kept generally lean and with tame ignition timing until higher up the revs

can you lower the "5k kick" so it comes in earlier?

It's possible, but I'd be surprised if a generic map was that far out. A sensor fault sounds more likely to me. Shocked the dyno operator said it was ok Are you running a cat and where was the measurement taken from?
  19. S

can you lower the "5k kick" so it comes in earlier?

something badly wrong there, you want 12.9 at peak on WOT
  20. S

can you lower the "5k kick" so it comes in earlier?

it's actually where the emissions restrictions allow full opening of the throttle (on fly by wire cars) and the engine is also allowed more fuel. Quite strict emissions rules for manufacture mean the fueling is lean quite far up the rev range. The Throttle is only open 85% at 5k on FBW cars.

Cheapest place to get 172 cambelt&tensioners?

yes it does. you have to take the plenum off to get to the blanking plugs on the end of the cams to get the locking tool in. dont necessarily need a new gasket obviously, they're normally fine.

    Next engine mod?

normal good practice to to spray with a sealing compound. good kits come with the sealer spray :)

    Rota??? Dodgy wheel thread....

erm, hate to state the obvious but.....BRAKE CALIPER HITTING SPOKE = DEFORMED SPOKE. Can't blame it on the wheel if they're been fitted over calipers they dont clear. Front and rear are clearly different ofset and dish design

FAO Winston or any other mk1 Clio expert!!

you need a williams specific downpipe.

FAO Winston or any other mk1 Clio expert!!

Devil manifold is probably the best, not made anymore though. Valver cast mani is better than the williams effort IMO. Supersprint looks nicely made, not seen one up close though. We considered one for Bex spider engine, but think I'm going to make one for it from a 172 manifold we have spare :)

182 Service what do I need doing?

actually just counting up, you're due a cambelt in 5 months at the latest, Auxbelt is overdue IMO so just do cambelt and auxbelt now
  27. S

182 Service what do I need doing?

I would recommend a "36k" service for that. same as 12k service plus the aux belt :)

    what's a wideband controller

bit vauge. Wideband measures AFR over a wider range, not necessarily more accurately. Mostly used as a mapping tool. Narrowband lambda is pretty useless for manual measurement of anything, it's almost exclusively used as a feedback and fuel trimming function on an ECU.
