Thanks Henry, I was already giving your post most credit because it quoted the official guidelines. Have also posted on the nets biggest MOT mechanics forum, but get the feeling I will only find out for sure on the day.
Re: One standard, one well good. Put the well good brake system on front or back?!
<Yes, assuming you have discs on the rear of your car & not drums ??>
Ah, trying to find that out in another thread!
<grooved discs on front, not drilled ( as in drilled all the way through, part drilled...
Re: One standard, one well good. Put the well good brake system on front or back?!
That's great thanks. So plain disks on rear and drilled / grooved disks on front would be the right way round.
I'm not 'on about' anything.
Just looking to buy some disks / brakes, and the front ones are sold seperately to the rears, suggesting that they are not interchangeable.
I was simply wondering why the brake systems on cars are different front and back.
DrRollos answer was good. I have a...
So...back to previous question:
Many of the brake parts on the MotorSportWorld website are advertised as 'suitable for all mkI including Williams' whereas everywhere else they are specific to different types of mkI. Does this mean that the disks and brakes on this website are non-standard and...
Re: Standard vs uprated brake pads
Re. Questions about the difference of 'uprated brake pads' and the response:
<So many that i could be here all day explaining so id recommend you have a browse to get a better understanding of whats available and buy some pads that you think would suit your...
The rears have been grinding for over 6 months (but strangely only in cold / damp weather and for the first 5 minutes) so I expect they're fucked. Thanks for the link.
Standard vs uprated brake pads
Whats the difference / best to go for?
I'm guessing that uprated = stop quicker, but wear out quicker? :S
What sort of difference are we talking about on both counts?
Are uprated road-legal?
But was that just for the pads? I'm fitting disks too. Is that more complicated?
<piece of piss> is relative to your skill level. Are you complete newbie / home mechanic / advanced mechanic? I've no idea what you mean by 'piston thing' or 'windback tool' so I'm already at a disadvantage!

That's what I'm looking for, thanks.
Some of the prices tho! I think Tarox 10 pot brake kit would be a serious, serious overkill on a 1.2L at £3600 front / back!!
Many of the brake parts on that website are advertised as 'suitable for all mkI including Williams' whereas everywhere else they...
<Maybe someone on here with the relevant knowledge can advise if this is correct before you rely on it?>
Hope so! Mixed messages so far - 2/2 each way!
Hi,
Looking for some nice new disks and pads for above model, but having eBayed & Googled, seems that only original or lower standard parts are available.
Is it not possible to get drilled / grooved disks and cool sporty pads for the mk1 1.2?
I know it seems an overkill but I want to make...
During an MOT test, do they observe the visual condition of the pads and disks or do they just test that the brakes stop alright?
To put another way, can my car pass its MOT if the brakes are worn (grinding) but performance seems unaffected.
(No lectures please - I'm getting them seen to).
Not really. Whoever I go with it would work out more expensive to claim (poor payout + excess + accumulated loss of no claims + future declarations of 'claims within past 5 years') would work out more expensive than just replacing my £1000 car if the worst happened. So, just going for cheapest...
Mothercluckers at SwiftCover charged me £359 for a standard 1.2 Mk1 last year (31y/o, good history but not recent, therefore zero no claims).
"Special offer", I can now get '2 instead of 1 years no claims bonus!' if I renew with them. Exactly the same circumstances, renewal fee with '2 years...
Having taken my s**t Clio mkI seats out to put in nice new Cobra ones, I now find that I can't attach the seat to the official Cobra/Clio subframe because the original Clio screws are too short (the Cobra subframe is thicker than the original).
b******s. Couldn't they juist put in some longer...
