the 172's run a map sensor. it wont be a map sensor prob. HT leads are very expensive. just check the resistance of them.

tbh putting new rings in, wouldnt be worth it, just source another engine.

could be piston rings then... do a compression test and put a drop of oil in the bores to see if it risies.

sounds like it may be misfiring. check the plug leads.
