The igniter and ballast come as a package if buying new from Renault. I don't think it was far off £250 last I heard. That's another thing it could be actually, the igniter. If the bulb isn't at fault when you swap them it's probably worth swapping the igniters over as well.

Swap the bulbs to the opposite sides. If the problem moves to the other side, it's the bulb that's at fault. If not, it's most likely the ballast.

I wouldn't say it was enough to make a noticeable difference. It would only bring the engine speed down from approx 3300rpm@70mph to 3100rpm (assuming 205/45r16 tyres). Although on saying that swapping in the 5th gear from a dci box (JC5-128 I think?) would make less of a difference still. The...

Am I right in saying that the vertical bolt in the above picture goes into the gearbox? If so, it's possible that your gearbox has been replaced in the past with one from a ph1, hence the use of a non-twisted mount.

Good point that. Also with cheap HID kits, it's usually the ballast that goes wrong if anything. If the hassle in the passat is getting in to change the bulbs, you could always place the ballasts in an easier to access area? (Although I've never seen under the bonnet of a passat, so I could be...

Do I hear @McGherkin coming? I wouldn't bother with LED's. They just can't throw the light far enough to be effective. Even the brightest ones only light up everything close to the car. Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Xtreme vision bulbs would be my choice if you're looking for more light...
