Long story short:
If you have a budget (lets say £4000) to buy and mod a Clio with then buy a PH1 for £1500 and spend the rest on modding it, then it will get round a track faster than any other RS Clio cup or not...
Cat D Integra DC2? - wont find one for £2k
Cat D EP3 CTR? as above
BMW E30 325i? - wont do over 30 mpg
Mk2 Golf GTi 16v? - long in the tooth now, youngest ones will be 17 years old
it is true about nwer cars, more safety, more weight = less fun
but after doing a fair few miles in different GTi's i do like them you really have to man handle them but they can be fun, just no where near as much as the Clio lol
My point exactly mate, and look at the price difference between mine and a Type R
MK5 Golf GTi, which he says is faster than mine, even though every time i pass him he had 'heat soak' or is loosing boost blah blah....
Id love a MK5 GTi, but again you cant get one for £2000

Look at the pipes, and on the 1*7's they are on the left near the large o/s engine mount, will prob have a blue and red cap on them
Bear in mind you need an air con machine to drain and re gas though

change it mate, i changed mine after 110k and iv just done it again (129k) and it feels completely different, will improve the feel no end
Cant see that as im at work mate, but if you mean the VVC, it simply put the inlet cam is adjustable to move the timing to give better low rev running and emissions, and re-adjusts , which in the 'old days' you had to have it either one or the other

persoanally id replace it, but if the guys say it will be ok then it should be ok :)
Id drain the cooling system, dry it right off, silicooooon and new o ring
i will imagine there is a rubber o-ring between which will be leaking but also remember mate that thats a plastic housing on a metal head, so i would imagine the plastic housing has warped and you might need a new one
Well a ph1 172 will cost you about 2k, and for that money you can have decent exhaust and brakes, and should be able to get up to around 210 bhp, maybe a lil more, throttle bodies would be lovely, iv driven ktecs low boost turbo conversion and its bloody impressive for just over 200 bhp

Oh the white stickered up ktec clio is the throttle bodied one, not turbo'd
