you've got power going to exciter on the starter so as long as battery is good then look at starter and main feed to it.
to do them properly you need a couple of locating dowels in them, personally i'd never match to a gasket they need to be matched to each other. get the faces skimmed, match them, lap them and run them without a gasket.
anything will be fine as they are cast. ally oxide will give you the best cut through rust/crap.
soda is vastly over rated. it's fine for light stuff but anything else it's not really upto the job.

s1000, saw one in a right state at around 30,000 miles, if that high? bearing behind the clutch basket was lose in the crank case, spun and wore the retaining plate away so the whole basket was clunking in and out. not to mention top end rattle:wink:
