main thing to watch for is that it goes into 1st and 2nd easily when the lever is pushed hard over but check it won't go into them once the collar is lifted and the lever moved over towards reverse.
chances are piston damage will be minimal. will say it again though...you've got an engine that you know exactly how it has been treated all it's life, stick with it.
