Seems very strange indeed, something isn't right somewhere. I'd have gone along with cam timing being off but if ben's done it i'd be pretty confident in the work so does seem strange. Its still worth checking the timing along with a compression test though I think.
My local factors can get QH lower balljoints seperate for the non-RS/RS models, they're about £10 a pop. Changed 2 on my old 1.6 and they seemed fine quality and fit wise. Much better than the £60odd (iirc) renault wanted for a full lower arm.
It detects the specific vibrations given off by preignition ie detonation, pinking, knock etc.
Basically the fuel self combusting before its wanted to, the ecu monitors the sensor and adjusts various things (not sure 100% what) to stop it.
The tools are about £60-70 for the locking tools and the aux tensioner tool. The full cambelt kit and auxbelt kit plus the two core plugs for the end of the head and an upper/lower inlet manifold came to £282 for me (and that was trade!). Be circa £300 I think.
Right thats fine, the terminal that read 1 is reading overrange for the meter which means that ones fine. The one thats dancing about is where your earth fault is and i'm guessing it a cheap meter that'll be why its jumping around as its pushing the limits of it.
Without a set of decent wiring...
