When I refitted my standard suspension to my 1.6 when I sold it the springs had expanded due to them being complete uncompressed for 9 months or so. I had to get a bar on the arb with the mrs standing on it to lower the hub so I could use a screwdriver and the ball joint to move the hub around...

No it shouldn't use any water so its leaking somewhere. If you can't find anything hose related i'd look at the waterpump.

Yep heres hoping for you! Yes halfords sell the 8mm square sump plug socket you need. I'd refill the gearbox with castrol 75w80 stuff (again halfords sell if your desperate slightly cheaper online), i've used it a few times in the renault boxes and they seem to like it fine.
