Its not that dangerous at all, just don't do it in an enclosed space make sure its well ventilated. Outside would be ideal with the boot and doors open.
I'd worry more about the fumes getting to you before I worried about them going up.

Mine work brilliantly tbh, the only time they have trouble is with a greasy/dirty screen. Don't think turning the auto lights off turns the auto wipers off as well, think there permanent.
Changing the box is straightfoward enough, nothing special anyway. Wouldn't have thought a replacement box would be that much for the 1.4 imagine it'll be a JB1 box you'll be after.
The JC5 box in the 172 doesn't have syncro on reverse so if the shaft is spinning then it'll grind when you try and select it, though as long as your stopped them it shouldn't grind at all. If you clutch and stop then select reverse does it grind? If your trying to rush it it won't have it...
