PS: We need an airfield or other private road. Not too keen on the idea of racing into potential oncoming traffic myself!
But "Quicksilver" sounds quite cool. Billabong sounds like a hole in the ground with some dirty water in it, if you see what I mean?! Does it come with an Aboriginal warrior or something? ;)

Every quickish car that I have owned has made the same banging noise when thrashed in the old traffic light GP. Even the bloody 206 GTi makes the banging noise you describe. My 172 did have a very loose engine that could be shaken around easily by hand, but are you sure this noise is the engine...

Ben H - when you say "tail end of when things go wrong", do you mean that if anything major was going to go wrong, it would have already done so?
Wongy - Do you mean I need to get the engine mounts done asap or at 200k miles?! And yes, the manifold did look a bit wimpy....!

Just been to see it. It was immaculate inside, with the only non-standard item being the head unit & cd changer. It had just been rained on so it was hard to tell about the paint, but the dealer says he had the bonnet re-sprayed and the passenger side rear wing lead blasted and resprayed due to...
