Do it - I am still on the look out for a cheap phase ugly, ideally with front end damage to buy, face lift front and rear aswell as dash, strip & cage and paint white.
I would love to polish them up to a mirror finsih, put as with the likes of Silvervisions not being put in place I am trying to keep the car a factory looking as possible. I feel they would look out of place on the car so I just wipe them over to keep them clean.
The above rountine is the way I play things on my 306. Though have been using Duragloss Aquawax some weeks to speed the process up.
Zymol wise I have Carbon, Titanium and Concours. They do look good, but my preference just for ease of use is swaying to the Swissvax products of which I have an...
Not a big BMW fan and the 1 seris does nothing for me tbh, though the M3's in any guise do have some appeal, the new on looks superb. Drooling over it EVO while eating my lunch earlier.
The Golf is sweet but is top money for a Hot Hatch.
What waxes have you used ontop of the Autoglym so far?
I use use AG SRP, EGP and P21s or Optimum Car Wax on my Silver 306.
Poorboys Nattys Blue and Megs 16 also look decent on it.
You will never get the same depth on Silver as you will on darker colour die to it reflecting the light so much...
P21s will be fine on it.
Supergard is a little poor IMO, you will be better of polishing and sealing it normally though to be honest.
Autoglym Super Resin and Extra Gloss topped with P21s would be my routine.
The new formula Scratch x is meant to be machine freindly though others have used the old one by machine even though Megs said it should not be.
Best of investing in some decent polishes for it though IMO, I use either the Poorboys SSR range or the Menzeran Range, others also use Meguiars 83...
Not sure on the said model, something like this?

Rotarys produce better results but need a little more care, and a fair bit of skill to get a swirl...
Does the alarm not chirp when you lock it if the bonnet is not closed properly already on the 172/182 ? Must be a simple way of linking a light on the dash onto the bonnet alarm pin.
Dont shatter all my dreams I am hoping to be able to return to my past with a decent Pug again ;)
I have not bothered with the 150 yet, will drive the GTi though.
xzibit - drop Brazo a pm on here he is closer to you than I am in Swindon.
PC stands for Porter Cable - so they are the only real option when it comes to random orbit polishers as opposed to rotary polishers which are commonly found. De Walt do a random orital but you limited to a fixed backing...
Scratch X will remove the probelm of smaller marks being induced as it breaks down as you work it unlike the AG, but requires lots of multiple applications to do a whole car by hand, will be time consuming and very tiring and still not be 100% succesfull. This is the reason I gave in and bought...
It is good at removing deeper marks but tends to leave fine swirls of its own which you may get lucky and be able remove with Super Resin.
It is an old style abbrassive which does not break down to a milder finsihing polish like the newer diminsishing products do. Not an ideal swirl removal...
