Depends on the wax, some you can apply to the whole car and then remove. I tend to do as you describe, wipe on the panel and wipe off

You can try and clean it up with some metal polish and wire brush. Cast bits like that are a pain to get looking good/factory again without getting them blasted. The other option is to get it polished like they do on here with the inlets and fuel rail covers.

Shame you are miles away, the guy that I use for dents could pull that using up to date PDR methods. See if any of the dents type people near you use hot glue paintless dent removal methods, means they can sort things from the outside if they can get behind.
