    erm 172's don't have any cables for reverse mate are you sure you have the correct B&M?? B&M's for 172's have a srpung loaded sleeve that you have to lift up to select reverse(there's a bit of plastic the collar slides over when you lift it up)

    could be the tappets, we had a 172 in that we recon never had an oil change EVER, the oil was like treacle! noisy tappets on that we had to flush the engine out with a diesel/new oil 50/50 mix with some engine flush thrown in for good measure, that sorted it

    75W90 normally causes that, Renault recommend 75W80 from memory

    yep! mine's back on the road now, albeit with a 172 cup engine (everything else is the same)

    high octane fuel

    172/182 can use either 95 or 98, you'll notice no performance gain by running higher octane (like 102 or whatever) mine runs on 95

    i just use 10W40 A1 motorstores stuff £10 for 5l semi syn (that in my cup engine) my V6 get elf 5W40 my 1.9D gets the cheapest stuff their is! it seems people read the marketing schpeel on oil bottles!!!!!
