Clean it out, drive on the motorway for 40 minutes, check it again. If its clean its not the headgasket. (If it breaks down in a flurry of white smoke and burning metal, its the headgasket.)

Best value for money mod for me was the steering wheel. My second 172 I fitted a 300mm Sparco jobbie and it was 100% improvement. Other than that, I think the best 'mod' is to completely refresh the car. New bushes, engine mounts, big service etc. Get it running 100%.

I use my wifes Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner. Get an old bottle, unscrew the trigger, put the tube into the brake fluid, and squeeze the spray trigger into the old bottle. When you've finished put the tube back into the bottle, screw it up, bin it. Done.

I think subtle is the way to go with Golfs. small drop just to smarten it up, GTI steering wheel, Uprate the bulbs (I detest HID's! lol) Get some good tunes in there and maybe fit a bigger set of wheels. (Although I like the ones you have!) I had a set of polished TT comps on my Black mk4...

Rust is common on the Clio 3 bootlid. Its where the water collects at the bottom of the rear window where it meets the glass. Its kind of a V shape.

Agencey Transmissions. Gray had his done there (iirc?) as did Tony and Jay of Burpspeed fame.
