If I was in your position, snap the dealers hand off. Its a no brainer. £1500 and get shot of it. You say it needs a new MOT, 3 tyres, Alternator and a ball joint. That there is £500 worth of work. If you fix it all up and get it ready its worth what, £2500? Then you'll get idiots...

When mine was doing it, we tried all different oils, three types iirc and nothing helped it or made it worse. Just my 2p but i'd not bother wasting time/ money changing the oil. If its crunching its broked. :(
