That's unusual, o2 handsets used to always be unlocked. They must have changed this within the last year or two.

The Mini 9 is nice but the hdd is so small that it is a bit limiting considering the budget he has available. There are better options.

Re: iphone appstore must haves? Seadragon from Microsoft is a very good tech demo of their new graphics display format which I think makes use of Silverlight. The world map zoom display is very good even when using 3G.
