so, in my case, it pays for itself, and that's on a standard 172

The problem with web-diagnosis of things like this is that, mostly, it's not possible.
I have a stalk & diusplay lead for my alpine and the whole thing works as normal.
but it was £70 quid at the time and MT say they're hard to find.
Simply ,there's a high probability you wont get that display working if you get a new HU
Just so I can empathise with the OP slightly:-
I started out with a Corsa 1.5 diesel ... without a turbo.
It maxed out at [figure removed] on a decline, "slipstreaming" a cavalier down a dual carriageway and took forever to get there.
but it did 50mpg all day, every day and cost buttons to...

As above, non-standard HID's will need you to add headlight washers and auto-leveling.
A lot more complicated than just changing lamps and still 90% likely to be a MOT fail

YOu'll want to make sure your shocks are in good order, they'll get a lot more stress with the shorter travel of the springs.
but, (and I'm sure somebody will clear this up) the DCi's have to handle heavier noses so might have stronger dampers anyway?
